If you’ve ever dealt with a urinary tract infection (UTI), you know how great it is that herbal tea can help soothe the irritation and speed up the healing process. Most UTIs are actually bladder infections that causes pain, irritation, and pressure sensations along the pathway that urine travels to leave the body. If an infection in this area is left untreated, it can spread into the kidneys where treatment becomes more difficult – so it’s extremely important that if you have a urinary tract infection you take care of it as soon as possible.
What Causes Urinary Tract Infections?
There are a variety of causes for UTIs, but they all happen because germs find their way into areas of the body where they simply should not be. In most cases germs use the urethra to get to the bladder – both very sensitive parts of the body. Most UTI germs are actually the same germs that we find readily in the intestines. When these germs stay in the intestines they can’t cause much trouble, but when they make their way into the urethra and bladder the body doesn’t have the same ability to protect itself from them. Women are more susceptible to urinary tract infections because they have a very short urethra which makes it easier for germs to make it to the bladder. Sex, diabetes, kidney stones or other kidney issues, prostate issues, pregnancy, or contamination can all lead to a UTI.
Healing A Urinary Tract Infection With Herbal Tea
There are three powerhouse herbs that have a long history of use among herbalists for helping soothe, calm, and heal UTI issues. These herbs are all great as a tea since staying hydrated is a key component in healing any infection – especially those near the bladder.
Cranberry
As you may imagine, cranberry herbal tea has a sweet, tangy, and really enjoyable flavor. It blends well with floral herbs and also does well on its own. While many people recommend drinking cranberry juice to help with a UTI, a tea is better since you’ll be getting amore concentrated dose of goodness without the sugar and additives.
Cranberry herbal tea helps fight off urinary tract infections by giving the body a usable boost of vitamin C while at the same time lending its unique healing properties that seem to target infections in this area of the body. cranberries can help keep the bad stuff that causes bladder infections from sticking to the walls so that the body can get rid of them easier and start the healing process. When used in conjunction with the other herbs we’ll explore below, you have a powerful UTI herbal tea remedy that gets the job done fast!
For those with recurring UTI issues, a daily cranberry herbal tea or adding cranberries to your favorite blend is a great protective tonic.
Echinacea is the true go-to herbal tea for infections of just about all types. It’s a gentle herb that gets to work fast without a lot of hassle. Although the flowers of the plant are gorgeous, it’s the roots that pack the healing power. A tea made from echinacea roots helps boost the immune system and kick it into high hear so that it can target infections and get them healed as quickly as possible. Echinacea also helps fight inflammation which can soothe a lot of the irritation associated with a UTI.
Uva Ursi
Also known as ‘bear berry’ in homage to one of its biggest fans, uva ursi is a champion antiseptic that targets the entire urinary tract system. As you sip your uva uirsi herbal tea, your body will break it down and flush it through your urinary system where it will cleanse, clear, and act as a mild diuretic to help flush the area.
When using uva ursi, it’s the process of elimination that helps most. Making sure that you drink lots of water while using this herb will ensure that your urinary system can continually flush all day long to get rid of infection and germs.
Chamomile herbal tea is a wonderful sipping tea to enjoy during a urinary tract infection. It helps soothe the nerves and the mind which can make it easier for you to relax and let your immune system get to work, and it can also help you get much needed sleep. Chamomile herbal tea also soothes and relaxes the smooth muscles of the bladder and can help calm and soothe the lining of the bladder and urethra as well.
As a sipping tea, enjoying chamomile throughout the day is a great way to stay hydrated while the other herbs above do their job. Try mixing all 4 herbs together to create your own healing herbal tea blend!
