If you’re a friend of mine on the Living Herbal Tea Facebook Page, you know that I have a big time sweet tooth and love turning my healing herbal tea into a treat as often as I can. One of the easiest ways to do that is to work with Carob. This amazing herb has a chocolate-like flavor that carries its own sweetness and depth, and it just so happens that it blends beautifully with some of the most beloved medicinal herbs out there. Today, I’d like to take you on a little tour of the flavor that Carob herbal tea carries, and introduce you to a few ways you can incorporate it into your own tea experience.
The Carob Tree
Carob comes from a sweet evergreen shrub that is grown heavily in Spain, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, and Greece. The seed pod is where all the flavor is, and it is cultivated and dried before use. Some types of carob seeds are gently roasted to fully open up their flavors, and this is my personal favorite kind to use. When roasted, carob takes on an earthy flavor that reminds me of rich dark chocolate and root herbs at the same time. It always curbs a chocolate craving for me and I love that I’m not getting any refined sugar along the way.
The Flavor Of Carob
Carob contains a lot of natural sugars. The flavor of these sugars is grounded and gentle unlike the aggressive taste of refined sugars or artificial sweeteners. The sweetness is part of Carob’s claim to fame since it lends these natural sugars to any tea it gets steeped with.
In addition to the sweetness, carob also delivers big, complex flavor. Like its rich color implies, Carob has a flavor that resides in the same arena of chocolate, coffee, and root herbs. It is deep, savory, and sweet all at once and a little bit goes a long way.
Carob seeds are used in powdered and extract form as a chocolate substitute in food recipes.
Brewing With Carob
The sweet, chocolatey taste of Carob blends well with a whole array of medicinal herbs. Florals, mints, and root herbs all seem to have an instant rapport with Carob, and the sweetness of the roasted variety can take the bitter edge off of the most intense medicinal leaf. Adding just a small pinch of dried and roasted Carob seeds to a medicinal blend can drastically transform the flavor to the point that even picky kids will enjoy it to the last drop.

Hi
A dear friend use to buy carob tea I think from bigelow. they discontined it.
Do you know of anyone who carries the actual carob tea bags.
Right now she has cancer and I would love to find it for her.
I don’t think she’s up to blending it herself?
Thanks for any help
